In October 2005, the first industry-led Conference on Canadian Stewardship was held in Toronto. This conference focused on two main themes; governance of stewardship programs in Canada and in measuring performance of those programs. At the inaugural conference over 180 delegates heard the views of a leading opinion pollster, consumer products company CEO’s, Association Executives, Senior industry experts, Deputy Ministers and Ministers of the Environment. These sessions dealt with serious issues that face consumer product companies in Canada.

Since the Toronto conference in 2005 the stewardship landscape in Canada has changed substantially. Electronics programs are now underway in Alberta, and will commence operation in Saskatchewan and British Columbia in 2007. More e-waste programs are expected to be announced in 2007 in several Canadian provinces. Packaging and printed paper programs have been legislated in Quebec and Ontario, and are expected to be implemented in western Canada as well. Tire recovery, paint programs, household special wastes, and oil reclamation programs continue to expand across the country.

The Conference on Canadian Stewardship will convene in Vancouver, BC on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 to examine the role that business is playing in shaping and operating stewardship programs in Canada. An emphasis in the conference will be placed upon looking at how these roles are developing, and how stakeholders can work together to make rational, cost effective producer responsibility schemes work in Canada.
