Marie-Luc Arpin

Marie-Luc Arpin ; is an  Life Cycle Analyst with the Interuniversity Research Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services; École Polytechnique de Montréal. The Centre has been formulating and examining a variety of life cycle techniques to assess the impacts of goods and services in Quebec . Marie-Luc will discuss not only how life cycle analysis fits with sustainable stewardship in Quebec, but also how LCA’s can assist in stewardship development in general. Marie-Luc from McGill University in 2005 with an undergraduate degree in mechanical Engineering, and has worked in the fields of construction engineering, renewable energies, international cooperation and sustainable development. She completed her postgraduate degree from l'Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) which focused on sustainable development and its implementation mechanisms, namely Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Claude Bernier
Executive Vice President
Marketing and Customer Innovations

Since November 2008, Claude Bernier acts as Executive Vice President, Marketing and Customer innovations. He is responsible for development of the brand and new store concepts. He is also taking charge of all Réno-Depôt marketing, in addition to retaining responsibility for Totem network operations in Alberta.

Bernier joined Ro-Na Dismat as the company’s new director of marketing in 1988. In 2001, he has been appointed executive vice-president of traditional and specialized stores.

Mr. Bernier began his career as a sales representative for Procter & Gamble before joining Sports Expert Inc., where he was successively assistant manager and then manager of advertising. Bernier spent the next eight years honing his skills at leading advertising agencies including Planicom PNMD Inc., Publicité BCP Inc. and Groupe Morrow Inc. By the time he left Groupe Morrow Inc., he was vice-president in charge of major accounts.

Claude Bernier studied at the École des Hautes études commerciales in Montreal, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in marketing in 1976.

Dave Betts

Dave Betts, Executive Vice President – eCycle Solutions, will be the moderator of Session 1 - October 6th. Dave became involved in electronics waste following a career in the technology industry where he worked in manufacturing, aerospace research and development, and management consulting. He is best known in the e-waste industry for his role as the founding President of Electronics Product Stewardship Canada and his subsequent position with eCycle Solutions. Dave is currently assisting eCycle with their expansion across Canada

Lloyd Bryant

Lloyd Bryant is the Vice President and General Manager, Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) for HP Canada. Mr. Bryant has overall responsibility for all aspects of HP’s Imaging and Printing business in Canada including sales, marketing, operations, supply chain and customer support. IPG offers the broadest and most compelling range of products, services and solutions for the Consumer and Business Market, ranging from Consumer Photosmart and multifunctional printers to high end digital presses and full print outsourcing services. Mr. Bryant also manages HP Canada’s environmental portfolio including end-of-life compliance, strategy and sponsorships.

Mr. Bryant serves on the Executive committee and is Vice Chair of the board of directors of Electronics Products Stewardship Canada (EPSC). EPSC is a not-for-profit organization working to design, promote and implement sustainable solutions for Canada’s electronic waste problem.

Mr. Bryant also serves on the board of directors of Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), the not-for-profit organization formed by leading retail, information technology and consumer electronic companies to implement the Electrical and Electronic Waste Diversion Program in Ontario

Ginette Bureau

Ginette Bureau is the President & CEO of Recyc-Québec. Recyc- Québec is a crown corporation that is tasked with the formulation and implementation of producer stewardship programs in that province. Programs that have been successfully initiated using a model where the businesses responsible manage their materials include, paints, tires, non-alcoholic beverage containers, and recyclable consumer packaging and printed materials. Ms. Bureau will outline how stewardship programs in Quebec are moving forward to sustainably manage a variety of materials in that province.

John W. Burgess
President and CEO
COCA-COLA RECYCLING, LLC

John W. Burgess joined Coca-Cola Recycling LLC in December 2006 and was elected President and Chief Executive Officer in April 2007. John has more than 35 years of experience in the beverage industry and has spent the last 30 years in a variety of roles in the Coca-Cola system.

Coca-Cola Recycling LLC (CCR) is an independent company focused on increasing the collection and recovery rates of materials used by the North American Coca-Cola system. John has led CCR's efforts to develop and deploy a system-wide waste diversion program for all Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) locations in North America. The company has also established centralized recycling centers in 30 locations across North America. During 2008, CCR was selected as the Official Recycler for both the Democratic and Republican National Committee conventions, recovering over 15 tons of reusable materials from these prestigious events. CCR has also worked extensively with NASCAR, NCAA, NFL and MLB to create successful recycling programs across the US. Since inception, CCR has diverted over 150,000 tons of packaging materials away from landfills and into new packaging solutions, many of which that are reused by CCE and other Bottlers to create a “closed loop” supply chain.

Prior to joining Coca-Cola Recycling, John led CCE’s e-Procurement, Collaborative Procurement and Supplier Diversity programs. He spent six years in Singapore, serving as Vice President of Strategic Sourcing for F&N Coca-Cola Pte. Ltd., and has also held various management roles in Strategic Planning, Supply Chain, Marketing and Procurement for The Coca-Cola Company, Coca-Cola Enterprises, JTL Corporation and the Dr. Pepper Company.

Since 2007, John has served on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. and is a member of the CCE Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Committee. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas and resides in Atlanta.

Scott Cassel

Scott is the Executive Director of the Product Stewardship Institute, Boston, Mass.. PSI has been taking groundbreaking steps in the past several years to bring legislators and potential stewards together to form workable agreements to move producer responsibility programs forward in the USA. Scott will discuss how cooperative processes can and have worked in the USA.

James (Jim) Downham

Jim Downham is President & CEO of the Packaging Association of Canada (PAC). The Packaging Association of Canada is making leading strides in the implementation of sustainable packaging throughout Canada. Their efforts are seen as revolutionary and serve as an example of how one sector of business is moving up the sustainability chain. The association is providing leadership for the packaging industry across Canada and increase our profile within the global market.

Jim was appointed the President & CEO of the Packaging Association of Canada in October 2006. Jim is an accomplished packaging executive who has devoted his career to creating value for his clients, employees and industry icons. He has an extensive background in folding cartons, flexible packaging, labels and metal containers. Jim was groomed as a sales and marketing leader and progressed through the ranks to the level of President and CEO of a $175 million North American business. He is also the founder and Chairman of LeaderLinx, a boutique North American executive recruitment firm serving the packaging and graphic arts industries.

Jim is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School and has completed executive programs at the Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and York University. Jim has lived and worked throughout North America and holds citizenship in Canada and the US.

Johanne Gélinas

Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Having joined the firm in February 2007, Johanne Gélinas leads the Montreal office’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability group. This group helps Canadian businesses to stay a step ahead and adopt a proactive approach to managing environmental and sustainability issues.

She has developed sustainable development strategies for her client base, which includes many public corporations, and has carried out several internal and external environmental performance audits in both the public and private sectors.

Ms. Gélinas has enjoyed a brilliant career in public service, concentrating on issues related to the environment and sustainability. She was Canada’s Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development from 2000 to 2007. Over that period, she conducted more than 60 environmental performance audits and audited the implementation of sustainable development strategies of public corporations and federal departments.

During the same time frame, she served as the Chairperson for the Working Group on Environmental Auditing of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI), which brings together the auditor general offices of over 180 countries. She also advised the Auditor General of Quebec on the creation of a position of commissioner of the environment and sustainable development and on the implementation of an environmental audit program.

Prior to that, Ms. Gélinas served 10 years as the Commissioner of Quebec’s bureau of public hearings on the environment (BAPE) and, from 1995 to 2000, she was a member of the National Round Table on the Economy and the Environment, for which she chaired the Task Force on Sustainable Transportation. She also assisted the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association to devise its climate change strategy.

In addition to her practice at Deloitte, she chairs the Board of Hydro-Québec’s institute of environment, development and society at Université Laval. She sits on the Sustainability Advisory Committee of Procter & Gamble and on the Sustainability Star Committee of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). She is also a member of the Suzuki Foundation steering committee and a certified trainer for the Global Reporting Initiative, and she delivers corporate responsibility courses to the Institute of Corporate Directors from Mcgill University.

Finally, she has received the 2009 UQAM recognition award for her avant-garde vision and commitment to sustainable development.

Tom Pinfold

Dr. Tom Pinfold is Vice President of Gardner Pinfold, a position he has held since the firm began operations in 1980. He is trained in both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of economics, an important strength he has used to advantage during his 20 years of program evaluation work. His economic analysis and program evaluation experience spans all ten provinces in Canada. His consulting assignments have called for a variety of applied economic analyses including cost-benefit analysis and economic impact analysis. These assignments cover topics such as sustainable development, community economic development, tourism, sector-specific projects in forestry, commercial and recreational fishing, agriculture, minerals, offshore petroleum development, and a rich variety of policy and planning issues. His international experience covers eight countries with assignments for CIDA and the former International Centre for Ocean Development. During his consultancy career, he has directed or written over 170 major reports including over 70 evaluation assignments. He has also facilitated numerous workshops for the Canadian Evaluation Society on cost-benefit analysis and the Essential Skills Series training workshop for evaluators.

Jerry Powell
President
Resource Recycling, Inc.
Portland, Oregon

Jerry Powell is the owner of three magazines (Resource Recycling, Plastics Recycling Update and E-Scrap News). He edits Resource Recycling. In addition, he aids in the management of two annual conferences, The E-Scrap Conference and Exhibition, and The Plastics Recycling Conference and Exhibition.

Previously Jerry founded and managed a recycling consulting firm for a decade and founded and managed a recycling business in Portland, Oregon for more than eight years.

He is a past three-time chair of the board of the National Recycling Coalition and the three-time chair of the board of a state recycling association. He has spoken on waste management and recycling issues in 46 states and five Canadian provinces.

Joachim Quoden

Joachim is the Managing Director or Pro Europe a pan-European stewardship organization located in Brussels, Belgium. Pro Europe strives to bring diverse stewardship organizations together though the use of best practices and inter-organizational cooperation.

Chris van Rossem

Chris van Rossem is no stranger to stewardship programs in Canada, even though he has been in Sweden for the past few years completing his Post Doctorate specifically dealing with extended producer responsibility and individual producer responsibility. Prior to attending Lund University, and studying the renowned EPR Professor Lindquist, he worked for Stewardship Ontario in Toronto.

Christina Seidel


Christina holds a Masters degree in Environmental Design (Environmental Science), as well as a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, and is currently undertaking her PhD in Engineering Management, with a thesis topic of Assessing Recycling Options using Life-Cycle Assessment.  She operates Sonnevera International Corp., a waste reduction consulting firm, and is the current Executive Director of the Recycling Council of Alberta. Christina loves rural life, choosing to live on a farm near Bluffton , Alberta , where her and her family raise Warmblood horses, and enjoy many other outdoor activities.

Peter Victor


Dr. Peter Victor, author of Managing without Growth. Slower by Design, not Disaster, and is currently a professor in environmental studies at York University. He has worked for nearly 40 years in Canada and abroad on economic and environmental issues as an academic, a consultant and as an Assistant Deputy Minister of the Environment, in the Ontario public service. Dr. Victor was the founding president of the Canadian Society of Ecological Economics and a past-president of the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science. Currently he is a member of the Board of the David Suzuki Foundation and several advisory boards in the public and private sectors
